Continuous Radon Monitors
Like you, we are concerned about our family’s health. According to the EPA and CDC, radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year.
Radon is everywhere; therefore, it is impossible to get a reading of 0. According to the EPA radon zone map of Virginia, some areas may be more concentrated than other areas, however, the map is not absolute. One house may have what’s considered to be a “safe” reading, whereas the house next door has an unsafe reading. Therefore, the CDC and the EPA recommend that every home be tested for radon. Homes with high levels of radon can be easily mitigated.
The EPA states that short term radon testing for real estate transactions can provide adequate results, however, long term testing is preferred. The longer the test, the better the results will reflect your home and lifestyle. Why? Radon levels in the home fluctuate greatly, depending on the season and weather. According to evicradon.org a study conducted in 776 houses across Canada demonstrates that long term testing provides precise results in over 96% of cases—whereas short term tests fail to predict the same outcomes up to 98% of the time. As a result, homeowners may think they have a radon problem when levels are actually safe—or worse, believe their radon levels to be safe when they are actually high enough to be a lung cancer risk.
